New Orleans is the South’s Best Food City in 2018
As the city of New Orleans gears up to turn 300, there is no shortage of new and exciting restaurant openings. Southern Living magazine even ranked the Big East as the South’s best food city for all of 2018.
“Legendary restaurants like Commander’s Palace, Antoine’s, Dooky Chase’s, and Upperline thrive in the same environment that has given rise to a new wave of restaurants like Turkey and the Wolf, N7, and Saffron that take cues from the classics but spin them in a way all their own,” writes Southern Living.
The local restaurants getting the most press aren’t the only ones providing guests with delicious menu items familiar to many. Check out the two brand new openings, Jack Rose and Bywater American Bistro, serving up great meals several days a week:
1. Bywater American Bistro
Located in the former Mariza location in the Rice Mill Lofts, Nina Compton’s Bywater American Bistro is now open at 2900 Chartres Street. Compton is joined by Levi Raines in this new venture they describe as an American neighborhood restaurant.
"To us, it’s a place you come to because you’re already friends of ours, or you soon will be,” the Bywater American Bistro website shares. “A casual energetic place with yummy food, authentic hospitality, great libations and friendly faces.”
The new restaurant is open Wednesday to Sunday from 5:00 - 10:00 pm and has recently launched a brunch seating 10:30am - 2:00 pm on both Saturdays and Sundays. Bywater American Bistro’s menu includes oysters, cheese plates, crab dip, pork belly, and plenty of other Caribbean-inspired Louisiana cuisine.
2. Jack Rose

Another brand new spot, Jack Rose, has taken over the former Caribbean Room restaurant in the Pontchartrain Hotel at 2031 Saint Charles Avenue. After parting ways with Josh Besh, the team behind Jack Rose spun out to launch the restaurant operations management company QED Hospitality that opened the restaurant at the beginning of April.
As QED explains, “Jack Rose brings an eclectic and fun dining experience to the Garden District. The lively atmosphere encourages spontaneous celebration whether enjoying dinner in the Jack or Rose rooms, hosting an escapade in the Mile High Pie Club, snacking on small plates under the Lil Wayne Portrait in the Living Room or sipping sparkling rosé in the Rose Garden Patio.”
Jack Rose is joined by Hot Tin, Bayou Bar and the Silver Whistle Cafe, all great options for travelers visiting New Orleans to check out during their stay.
