New Orleans' Best New Restaurants - Summer 2017

This summer has been an exciting one on the New Orleans restaurant scene. We've had a plethora of innovative and exciting new restaurants open that you have to try. Here are five of our favorite new restaurants in New Orleans:

1. Saffron

Saffron Nola was launched by the Vilkhu family five years ago in Gretna and initially operated as a Friday night-only dinner restaurant that occasionally hosted special set menu dinners and Sunday brunch. Saffron headed across the river and opened up a brick-and-mortar store on Magazine Street in early August. The Vilkhu family is serving up Indian cuisine and cocktails with their own unique twist. The menu includes an assortment of naan and small plates.

As an added tip: we’ve heard the curried seafood gumbo is to-die-for!

2. Namiya

New ramen shop, Namiyaopened up in August on Magazine Street and offers traditional Japanese ramen noodles. Nomiya, which means tavern in Japanese, will serve lunch and dinner. Every bowl is filled with noodles, pork, eggs and scallions. Optional add-ons include fish cakes, pickled ginger and bamboo shoots. The most important ingredient, however, is the "tare," a secret mix that flavors the broth.

3. Beth Biundo Sweets

Beth Biundo, longtime Lilette pastry chef, interior designer, and proprietor of the occasional pop-up and regular online shop, Beth Biundo Sweets, opened up her shop in the former Cleaver & Co. space at 3917 Baronne Street. The bakery sells cakes, cookies, tarts, coffee, and beverages. Ice cream and breakfast items will be added over time. No plans for a liquor license, but the shop will allow BYOB with no corkage. The bakery opened in late July and is the perfect one-stop shop for everything sweet.

4. The Flying Pig

The Flying Pig Cafe, a restaurant focusing on Southern cuisine from husband-and-wife team Rob and Kat Vance, will open on Prytania Street tomorrow, September 1.. Anticipated menu items include: Lowcountry shrimp and grits, Caribbean-style fried chicken, smoked pork ribs, as well as a dedicated kids menu. Expect breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch.

5. Tito Ceviche and Pisco

Located in the revolving former Ivy space on Magazine Street, Tito Ceviche and Pisco opened its doors in mid August. The menu is built around traditional Peruvian dishes, such as lomo saltado (stir-fried beef tenderloin and onions with crispy potatoes); ceviche; and Pisco. Juan and Tatiana Lock are behind the project, with Juan Lock heading up the kitchen with sous chef and Johnny Sanchez alum Nanyo Dominguez Cervantes
